This first installment of the .hack// gaming series serves as the onset for the storyline following the adventures of Kite. Invited to play in The World by his friend, Yasuhiko (the player of Orca of the Azure Sea), this fledgling Twin Blade quickly finds himself on the wrong end of a battle with the Phase known as Skeith. As they traversed a low-level dungeon, the pair noticed a glowing white figure floating across the screen. Following the image, they were soon put face to face against impossible odds.

Through a series of unfortunate events, Kite receives the Book of Twilight and a strange bracelet that allows him to alter the data of monsters he encounters. With the help of new items and friends, Kite must face the dangers of The World while trying to unravel the mysteries that it holds.
