    Last November we at DHN wanted to host a community programming day where you the community would put your skills to the test and create the best fan dothack game. But to many people's disinterest in performing such a difficult task and many people questioning their graphic and programming skills, we sought a way to balance the field so that everyone could participate. Rather than the community sit and write code or sit and draw, we discovered an easier method. What if we provided the programs you could use and you would focus more on the storytelling. And thus the genre Text Adventure Game was the best platform to allow everyone the chance to participate.

    A text adventure game, for those unfamiliar does not use graphics whatsoever. It works like a Choose Your Own Adventure books, where everything is predetermined but the reader, in this case the player's choice would determine different outcomes of success or failure. The player is given a text prompt and makes a choice when the narrative needs a player to interact, or the player can move around and select options based on words and actions. If anyone may have been fortunate to play, a real life example of a game that is best known for this would be Zork.

    The programs you may choose for this challenge are Inform 7, Twine, Quest, or ADRIFT. You will want to read on the features each program has to offer best suited for your needs, i.e. some can be created on a web page without having to install any software, others allow easier navigation for branching results. Whichever option you choose is acceptable, you may even use any other software not mentioned here. So long as the community can download and play your game.

    The last rule and most important rule to this challenge is that it must be dothack related. Whether you decide to use existing dothack characters in a new story, or using the canon characters to retell the same story for those who were unable to play the games, or if you wish to create your own original characters that exist in The World franchise is acceptable. Which version of The World is up to you, the original, The World R:2 from the .hack//GU games, The World R:X from .hack//LINK, or The World FORCE:ERA from the movie .hack//Beyond the World. Character classes should be mentioned or made apparent, use of friendly creatures like Grunty's and ChimChim's are also encouraged, and of course monsters! While pulling out your notebook or notepad writing ideas, you should consider the following: protagonists, antagonist, supporting characters, a conflict, a solution, and a resolution. Be sure to consider other literary tools like themes and tones.

    And of course, be sure to share your works when you finished. Make sure to tag us @dothacknetwork on social media when you wish to share your work. And on September 13th 2019 aka International Programmers Day, we will pick an entry as the winner of 2019's Make Your Own Dothack Game challenge!

    Without further ado, I bring you Niko Leigh!

    Favorite anime/cartoon/movie: This is too hard to pick. In the moment I'm really into Boku No Hero Academia and Bungou Stray Dogs

    Favorite game of all time: Although my youth belongs to .hack// my favorite game of all time (currently) is probably Dragon Age Inquisition. I've played that game over 10 times so I guess I like it a good amount.

    Favorite CC2 game of all time and why: original .hack// original run. I can't pick just one because the plot expands over all of them making them one complete game!

    Best CC2 game memory: Going through the small easter egg after you beat Quarantine where Mia and Elk end up reunited. Learning that Elk's player stays in the game for future .hack// games and stay together is also very cool (though I don't want to give away too many spoilers if they are considered spoilers still!)

    Hidden Talents: I'm writing a poetry book that should be self published ...eventually

    Picture explanation: (I'm not sure which you will use but since I provided a lot of Elk I'll write more about Elk!) I dabbled in cosplay a little but didn't really apply myself until a friend asked me to be her Kite. Since making Kite two years ago I've been really active in cosplay. I finally pushed forward and finished my all time favorite sad .hack// boy Elk in April of this year. Props have been a challenge for me so making Elk's shell like wavemaster staff head out of a block of glued together insulation foam was a big feat. I ended up really enjoying it even though it was very time consuming. Learning to resin gems was also very new to me. It's been a bit of a journey but I'm glad to finally be cosplaying my favorite .hack// boy as .hack// meant so much to me growing up! Now that I know more about props I'm looking to remake Kite this year and maybe someday make Ovan!

    Dream/Aspiration in the future: for my career path it's passion and non-profit based (LGBT+ youth education and homeless prevention)

    For cosplay, I really want to learn how to make bigger and better props. Ovan is another dream cosplay of mine and I'm hoping with the revive of GU I can get other people to cosplay with me!

    Naruto and .hack developer CyberConnect2 will announce new projects on February 1, 2018, company president and CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama teased during the latest “Game Kaiwai Idobata Kaigi” live stream.

    “Rather than reminisce about the past 20 years, we will announce what kind of strategy we have planned for the next 10 years,” Matsuyama said. “We will announce new CyberConnect2 developments and new projects.”

    According to Matsuyama, the announcements will come through press outlets such as Famitsu. He added that Famitsu does not know anything about what they are going to announce yet, and will not be gathering all the necessary material for their coverage until January 11.

    In a separate Famitsu interview regarding ambitions for 2018, Matsuyama said, “I have been developing games for more than 20 years, and I will soon announce our ‘New 10 Year Plan for the Future.’ I will reveal the new business strategy of CyberConnect2. Please look forward to February 1, 2018.”

    Bandai Namco shared some new bits of information in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine on .hack//G.U. Last Recode with a look at Haseo’s new weapon that is exclusive to his 5th form.


    The weapon is called “Gate of Ouroboros” and it is only available for Haseo’s new 5th form. The weapon can change form, and each one determines which of the eight arts it can use along with a variety of combos. It also has a secret “Skill Trigger” combo activation ability, but we’ll learn more on that later.


    .hack//G.U. Last Recode releases in Japan on November 1, 2017 for PlayStation 4 and PC. The game releases in North America and Europe this fall. Check out our previous report for a look at the latest screenshots.

    I love “trapped in a video game” stories—be that in books, anime, or even games. As a gamer, such stories directly relate to my greatest passion. But more than that, “trapped in a video game” is setup brimming with the potential for epic plots and thematic explorations.

    Much can be done with the “trapped in a video game” setting. It can be used for straight-up adventure or horror. It can bring to life an exploration of the human psyche or be a thought experiment for the construction of a society as a whole.

    In other words, it’s the way this setting is used that makes all the difference; “trapped in a video game” is the starting point, not the be-all and end-all of the story.


    That’s one of the reasons I get frustrated when things like Sword Art Online and Log Horizon are called rip-offs of the first popular “trapped in a video game” franchise, .hack//SIGN. It’s like saying Star Wars is a rip-off of Star Trek just because Star Trek came first and has a similar setting: a galactic civilization in space.

    Yet despite the shared general setting, we all know these two series couldn’t be more different. One is science fiction and concerned with exploration, the future of mankind, and social commentary on our modern day world. The other is science fantasy and gives its all to the creation of an engrossing adventure about heroes and villains battling among the stars.


    In the same way, .hack//SIGN, Sword Art Online, and Log Horizon are fundamentally different stories despite having the same starting point—a “trapped in a video game” setup. .hack//SIGN is a mystery about a single person trapped in a video game and how he (and those players around him) deal with the psychological and game world problems that relate to his situation.

    Sword Art Online is an action adventure where thousands of people are trapped in a video game with the ever impending threat of real world death looming over them. It spends its time on action, romance, and an episodic exploration of how various people have adapted differently to the new world. Log Horizon, on the other hand, is not as interested in the individual’s reactions as it is in the overall implications of building a new society from the ground up in a game world made real.

    For decades, fantasy works have built amazing tales on the backbone of the Lord of the Rings-style setting—and that’s not a bad thing. Video game worlds in any form of storytelling are the perfect setting for future fantasy and sci-fi works—and the plot device of being trapped in one is just one of countless possible subgenres that can tell any number of enjoyable stories.

    So remember: Just because a setting has been used before doesn’t mean that other works with the same setup are simply inferior, cheap copies. There are many epic stories out there that start at the same place. And the more creative imagining that can springboard from that “same place”—whatever it may be—the better for us as readers, viewers, and players.

     公開実験第1号として登場したのは,.hack(ドットハック)シリーズなどの開発で知られる独立系デベロッパ,サイバーコネクトツーで代表取締役社長を務める松山 洋氏だった。

     というわけでブースで公開されていた実験風景の映像では,まず女性係員の指示でヘッドマウントディスプレイの設定を行う松山氏の様子が映され,映像コンテンツとして映画「バイオハザードV トリビューション」のプロモーションムービーが流された。これ自体は,最近テレビなどでもよく放映されているものと同じ――ただし立体視映像になっている――である。

     クリエイターとして刺激される部分も大きかったようで,松山氏は早くもこのようなデバイスを使うとどのような表現ができるかなどについて思いをめぐらせているようだった。表現方法としては,現実の中で少しだけ嘘をつくと非常に効果的なので,実際,氏も「どのタイミングでだましてやろうか」と創作意欲を燃やしていたのが印象的だ。本物の「The World」を体験できるようになる日は近いかもしれない。
