This is a copy and paste of my comment on the Dothack Network Facebook page, which you can find here.
The issue is regarding the fan interest in a new remaster of the so-called “First Season” of the .hack video game franchise. The .hack “First Season” includes four separate games: Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, and Quarantine; aka IMOQ.
I would, again, like to calm the waters a little bit with all this talk of a possible remaster of the original four .hack games. Please, please calm down and focus on what’s here, right now.
I understand the hype, but now is not the time to be daydreaming about what somebody mistakenly let slip, giving fans the idea that this may be possible or even in the works when it’s not.
But if you can’t quell your desire for a possible remake, then I would suggest you support Last Recode with every ounce of your being NOW. I’m pretty sure everyone here already bought the game, but if you haven’t yet, now’s the time to show your support.
I know it’s really hard to purchase official merch outside of Japan, but I would also suggest you try to look into ordering some of the merch through a deputy service or on Amazon Japan (they will usually ship internationally).
Also, write and tell BANDAI NAMCO ENTERTAINMENT that you want international access to .hack merchandise!! Not only that, but tell them how much you love the series: the games, the anime, the novels and manga! Don’t feel embarrassed to let your fan-heart gush a little!
Get involved in my fan giveaway contest on Twitter, going on now! Tell people how much you love the series, tell a friend about it who maybe hasn’t even played it yet. I will have more contests in the future, too, so stay tuned to my site.
Ultimately, if you all really want a remake of the first four games as badly as you say you do (this is where I give you a little “tough love,” so please don’t hate me for telling it like it is), then you have to put in the effort to support the series as a whole first.
That’s just economics. If Last Recode doesn’t make a certain number of sales, then there is NO future for anything. Thankfully, though, sales both in Japan and internationally look really good and BNE is quite pleased. That’s good, but we can’t stop there; we can’t let our guard down just yet!
Keep talking about .hack on social media and wherever else possible. If you have a blog or website or something similar, write about it (I’m guilty here as I have yet to finish my editorial on Last Recode orz). Get other gamers interested in the series, introduce it to a friend or family. If you know somebody likes both anime and games, you could first introduce them to the anime TV series .hack//SIGN or .hack//ROOTS or go over to one of the movies (maybe avoid TRILOGY if they intend on playing Last Recode lol).
Basically my point is… there isn’t time to daydream about what could be right now. We need ACTION that is clearly visible and makes a difference to BNE, the publisher. If they do not make a profit from the series, nothing will happen. We’ll get NOTHING. So please, please… I understand how excited everybody is over the thought of a remake–I am, too–but now is not the time.
If you’ve already done all you can to support Last Recode and this message is redundant, I’m really sorry. This topic has been a bit of a thorn in my side ever since people started talking about it A WEEK after the release of Last Recode. ^^;;
We hope you guys are excited for the weekend!
To give you something to do while you're killing time at work/school/life, here's another Super Fan Friday to check out featuring the awesome and dangerous when cold, Derin !
Name: Derin White
Occupation: Retail worker
Hobbies: Gaming, crocheting and knitting, sewing
Dislikes: Rude people, mansplaining, Christmas music
Favorite game of all time: Very difficult to answer... Tie between .hack (original 4), Sailor Moon: Another Story, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Dragon Age: Origins, and Guild Wars 2. These are all great for very different reasons and can't choose one over the others.
Hidden Talents: Get so cold that my hands will leave burn marks on people's arms
Favorite anime/cartoon/movie: Sailor Moon Crystal/Teen Titans (original series)/Galaxy Quest
Favorite CC2 game of all time and why?: .hack//Infection because I was stationed overseas when it came out and it was such a wonderful distraction going out and getting drunk after watch because there was nothing to do. I probably would be an alcoholic like all my other shipmates if it wasn't for that game.
Best CC2 game memory: Can't remember if it wasn't .hack//Outbreak or .hack//G.U. Rebirth. Got to the last boss and started to have a panic attack because last boss fights are so hard. Defeated it in like minute, and felt so silly about over thinking it.
Briefly explain the picture you sent us: This is everything .hack related I've collected over the years. Most of it is in Japanese because it took so long for stuff to come out stateside.
Dream/Aspiration in the future: Pay off my credit card bill and find a new place. I'm boring.
Don't forget to show some love. Have a great weekend everyone!
December is here and Christmas is near, so our early present to you is the lovely Xelles and her awesome cosplay for this week's Super Fan Friday! Check it out! Show some love! Let's get festive!
Hobbies: "Cosplay, gaming, playing piano"
Favourite game of all time: ".Hack//I.M.O.Q"
Hidden Talents: "I'm an okay artist"
Favourite Anime/Cartoon/Movie: "Steins Gate, Legend of Korra, Speed"
Favourite CC2 game of all time and why?: ".Hack//I.M.O.Q I'd say entirely because of BlackRose, I love her character and how she opens up. She acts tough, a little rough around the edges and has a hard time trusting and opening up to people, and admittedly I saw myself in her doing everything she would have, if something ever happened to my younger sister IRL. An older sister has to be tough."
Best CC2 game memory: "Playing .Hack//Infection and finally beating Skeith for the first time!!! (Expect the dance of 'I beat Sephiroth' only, .Hack style)"
Briefly explain the photos you sent us: "The photos are of myself as an inspiration of what Azure BlackRose could have been in .Hack//G.U if she were to exist, as inspired by this deviant art piece by En-Drance and my own interpretation of the blades from Azure Kite.
The blades on my friend's twin blades were also made by me, made from 7 layers of plywood and 1/3inch aluminium 'guards' that fold for convenience. They are quite heavy but con-proof (won't break)"
Dreams for the future: " My aspiration for the future is to earn enough money to travel the world with my travel-bug partner"
This is just a very early, preliminary announcement for a fan contest that I want to set in motion. The basic premise behind the idea is for fans of the .hack series share their enthusiasm with others while also targeting potential new fans!
*If anything is unclear or if I left anything out of this post, I will fix it later! Please understand if there are any changes to these details.
Some of the goodies I have to use as giveaway items include:
New World Roundtable featuring Nino CD
.hack//Link PSP Game
.hack//re-birth Disc historical Disc Blu-ray
.hack//G.U. Returner DVD
.hack//G.U.+ Manga Vol.2-5
.hack//G.U. Vol.3 Complete Guide
.hack//G.U. TheWorld Vol.05
I have one more special item available. Please keep reading to find out more!
The way to enter is simple. Just go on twitter and talk about the series. You can post artwork, fanfics, photos of your own gameplay; really anything goes! But the one thing you MUST post are the following tags:
Winners will be chosen at random from the contest hashtag, so the more you post, the more likely you will be chosen for a prize.
Only one person is eligible to win, so please do not create sock puppets in an attempt to win more than one item. Likewise, I am only able to send one item to any given address. This is to avoid one person faking a friend and claiming more than one item. Yes, this has happened in the past…
As for the prizes, I’m very sorry, but they are all used items and in Japanese. The games, DVDs, and Blu-rays may only work on Japanese systems.
I would also like winners to be free to choose which item they’d like to receive. This will be decided at a first-come-first-served style.
Items are completely free of charge since I’ve already paid for everything, but I would like to ask for the shipping fees to send the items to you. This means that if you are a chosen winner, you have the right to claim or reject your winnings. I will continue to choose winners from the list until all items have been claimed. Shipping fees must be sent via PayPal and I cannot send your item until I have received your payment.
Here’s a brief flow of the contest:
You post .hack stuff on Twitter with the above hashtags.
At the conclusion of the contest, I will pick winners at random from the contest tag. I may also record this live so you can see how I do this.
I will contact these people via Twitter DM and ask which item you’d like to claim. This is when you may choose to forfeit your winnings if you are unable to pay for shipping. (Please understand that I am just a fan myself and am financially unable to offer a completely free contest.)
I will package your item up and get an estimate from the post office. Items will be shipped from Japan via EMS. This is one of the more expensive shipping methods, but it is also the safest and fastest method that comes with a tracking number. Depending on the weight of your item, shipping will likely be anywhere between $8-18. The heaviest book, the .hack//G.U. Vol.3 Complete Guide might be more. I won’t know for sure until I take the items to the post office for an estimate.
Once I have an estimate, I will contact you in which you may again accept or deny your winnings. Should you accept, this is when I will give you my paypal address for you to send the shipping fees.
Once I receive the fees, I will send your item.
The contest will run from NOW until roughly 10am on December 26 (Japan time). This date & time is subject to change.
Last but not least, I also have an extra, unopened .hack//G.U. Last Recode Premium Edition. I would like to use this for ART ENTRIES ONLY, but I feel this is being overly inclusive, so we’ll see… I’m up for suggestions. It may also be possible to ask CC2 CEO Matsuyama Hiroshi for his autograph… I don’t know if I can get this accomplished, however, so please don’t get your hopes up.
THE MAIN GOAL AND PURPOSE OF THIS CONTEST…
…is for fans to have fun discussing the series, to spread the word about it, and… it’s mostly to boost the hype.
If you love the series, I think this would be a fun way for you to get involved and share that passion with others!
And also, if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions or anything, please feel free to let me know!
What an awesome Super Fan Friday we have for you this week!
Check out Sergio's insanely cool .hack collection and pics from his .hack party!
It brings us great joy that we have such awesome fans like Sergio around the world!
Name: Sergio Castrejon
Country: United States
Occupation: T-shirt screen printing trainer ( I print and teach trainees how to print on t-shirts)
Hobbies: Playing games, watching anime, drawing, photography, cosplay, research, graphic design, and watching youtube videos.
Dislikes: Wasting time waiting or going in the wrong direction, being woken up during a nap or the middle of my sleep, and losing personal objects.
Favorite game of all time: The legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask
Hidden talents: I like to think I can adapt to a new game quickly just by learning its few controls
Favorite anime/cartoon/movie: Favorite anime would be Fooly Cooly (FLCL), while favorite movie comes down to either “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The world”, “Gremlins 2”, or “Back to the Future” part 1.
Favorite CC2 game of all time and why?: I'd say it would have to be “.hack//G.U. vol. 3 Redemption”. Theres is two main reasons why. One; I felt connected more connected to Haseo as character, the way he was, the way he changed and how he turned out in the end. I felt I learned a lot from his experiences and related them to my own in real life. Meeting new people, letting them into your life, and the fortitude to keep moving forward through hardship even when you don’t end up with the result you wanted takes a lot of courage. My second reason; the game also connected a lot of dots for not only the G.U. trilogy, but also for the .hack series from before in the timeline. Bringing old characters back from the original games into G.U. like Elk and Wiseman, Being able to fight The One Sin which made Blaming and Orca the Descendants of Fianna, seeing Aura, connecting the forest of pain from .hack//ROOTS, and even finding Herald at the end of the event. I loved how it brought nostalgia back and incorporated it in its own essence of the G.U. series.
Best CC2 game memory: In .hack//QUARANTINE, after you finish the game you get a few extra quests. One of those is the quests to go and bring back Mia to have her back as a character. In that dungeon you have to repeatedly keep data draining bugs to defeat them as the levels of infection on Kite keep increasing while you go lower and lower into the dungeon. It took me about a month playing every day to try and beat that dungeon and get Mia back since every time I tried the levels of infection would get severe and lower my level, give me status effects or just a plain game over. I had no Idea that Mia was lying at the end of that quest and didn’t know if there was an easier way since game walkthroughs weren’t fully developed, but the challenge of getting to the end of that dungeon was enough to keep me going. Once I beat the dungeon, I had such a great sense of accomplishment, it might have just fueled my love for the franchise for adding to the experience and the theme of the story, for when you work hard for something, it gives more meaning to the things that you want in life. In this case, clearing a dungeon to save a character.
Briefly explain the picture you sent us: My friends and I had a .hack//G.U. Last Recode release party to not only commemorate the game coming out, but the return of .hack. Since we’ve had a long history with the game since we were teenagers, seeing the release of something new from a beloved franchise made us want to hold a party for it, especially now that we could host a party and being in our late 20’s. We figured we should theme everything .hack so we brainstormed for an afternoon on what we wanted to do and serve. On the day of we figured to also take a picture of the collection we had. Most of the collection in the picture is mine, while the plushies and the .hack//SIGN vol 6 DVD are my fiancé’s. She has her own collection and another friend who attended also has more stuff we don’t own, but as we kept stacking and displaying one collection, it started getting complicated to keep items in place. Seeing the entirety of the collection displayed on my living room table made me realize how the universe of .hack is so intricate and fascinating as the same time. So many books, games, and anime made it what it is today. I can’t think of any other franchise that can compare with he universe of .hack.
Dream / Aspiration in the future: I don’t think I have a lot of major goals planned in my future. I feel that the older you get, the more entangled you get with life and your aspirations may change as well. My current mission is to be able to buy a home, pay off my student loans and not live paycheck to paycheck. But if there was a goal I wanted to accomplish, that would be to focus on my hobbies. I wouldn’t want to turn them into a profession, I just want to be able to love doing what I do for fun. I already do cosplay so I’d love to give more attention to that, and I also like to do photography so it would be nice to take photographs of beautiful landscapes or people. But those things require money which makes it hard when you’re responsible managing a budget. One thing I do have planned for the future is to some day open up a shop with my fiancé and sell items we designed or made at conventions and meet new people. I would also love to learn how to play the cello one day though, that's always been an something I’d like to do before I die. In the end it all takes time, whether I can do these things tomorrow or years from now, its all up to me.
Greetings CC2 family! Andrew here with another Super Fan Friday. This time we have the lovely Ayane from Austria and her awesome .hack collection and Cosplay. Show some love.
Name: Everybody just calls me Ayane.
Occupation: Housewife and soon Mother
Hobbies: Gaming, Fan fiction, Cosplay, My Cats, Metal Music.
Dislikes: I hate insects.
Favorite Game of all time: So hard to answer but I'll stick with Dead or Alive 2 for the Playstation 2.
Hidden Talents: I can write good fan fiction some people say.
Favorite Anime/Cartoon/Movie: I don"t watch much Anime, but I like the original Dragonball. In terms of Cartoons, I like the Batman- The Animated Series and my favorite movie is the Warcraft Movie.
Favorite CC2 game of all time and why?: I'd say .hack//Infection. It was my first entry into the .hack universe, and it was love at first sight. I wanted to know more about the whole franchise, and soon I became a big fan.
Best CC2 game Memory: It was with .hack//g.U Vol3: Redemption. I played through the Forest of Pain, and I had no problems with it. I was proud of myself that I had finished it. I used Shino and Azure Kite to do it.
Briefly explain the Picture you sent to us: The first two pictures are showing my little collection. It's hard to get .hack stuff in Austria so I needed to import some things but my collection will grow stronger. The other 2 are showing me in my cosplays as, Sakuya and Kite. I started around 2015 with cosplay, and my goal was to cosplay characters that I love, but aren't really popular. Kite was on my Top List, as well as Rena from Star Ocean for example.
Dream / Aspiration for the Future: I want to be a good mother, and play the .hack games and cosplay with my child.
The outpouring of support and love since the release of .hack//G.U. Last Recode has been nothing short of incredible and we've been getting great reviews and Feedback.
Given this, it seems only fitting that our Super Fan Friday this week showcases the passion of an individual who, like many of you has helped keep .hack alive with their passion. Check it out!
Occupation: Quality Control
Hobbies: Cars, Computers, Video games
Dislikes: Naruto (come on, .hack// is way better, focus on developing that instead!) I also dislike the lack of scale figures that we have for .hack// (can't wait for the Haseo figure though omg!!!!)
Favorite game of all time: .hack//IMOQ, and close second would be Nier:Automata
Hidden talents: I'm a human ditto whereas I copy the behaviour and way people talk around me without trying to
Favorite anime/cartoon/movie: Bleach/Ergo Proxy/.hack//liminality
Favorite CC2 game of all time and why?: .hack//IMOQ because it's the whole reason I learned about CC2 and became the foundation of my love in jrpg's and anime today!
Best CC2 game memory: playing .hack//fragment online with other people! It was such a blast and really brought the game to a whole new level!
Briefly explain the pictures you sent us: this has been a collection of love built up slowly over the years. Next to the grunty plush is my first ever .hack// game I got when I was a kid. I hold it dear to my heart. In the glass case I have a signed copy of each of the 4 discs from IMOQ by Hiroshi Matsuyama on the cover and inside booklet. The kite and shino figures are garage kits I commissioned to be built and painted. The poster on my wall is an uncut sheet from .hack//Enemy that I was so lucky to win last year on a Facebook contest. I also cosplayed as Elk who is my favorite character from IMOQ at Anime North one year which is what the staff is from!!
The CEO of CyberConnect 2, Matsuyama Hiroshi, held a really interesting seminar for game creators and those interested in the topic. Although, I am hardly part of the industry, the interest and passion has always been there. I was able to attend this event, although I arrived a little after it had begun.
There was also time for a book signing and a brief discussion gathering after the event where we were treated to some small drinks and snacks.
Matsuyama was completely in the game tonight and it was clear he was enjoying giving the seminar. I had a blast just listening to him tell the handful of anecdotes throughout the evening.
We were told that we were free to take photos, but to just be mindful of when it was appropriate to take photos. ?
▲ Quick company stats with photos from the Fukuoka, Tokyo, and maybe Montreal offices?
Fukuoka Studeo: 180
Tokyo Studeo: 33
▲ Slide for 『.hack//G.U. Last Recode』!!
▲ Naruto is one of the main titles that CC2 releases. This is Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 “Road to Boruto”.
▲ Another one of their series would have to be Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure. This is the PS3 release of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle and the PS3/PS4 release of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven.
▲ Here’s one of the few smartphone applications that they produced, Full Bokko Heroes X for both iOS and Android.
▲ The offices are literally littered with more than 60 different magazines every month for employees to browse!
▲ There are also all kinds of movie and anime DVD/Blu-rays, individual manga books, and various video game titles freely available to employees.
▲ The company also provides many opportunities for employees to “skill up” their abilities in various areas such as C++, UnrealEngine4, Python scripts, and more.
▲ With the basic introduction out of the way, this was the “meat” of the seminar:
“The Game Creator Seminar”!!!
▲ First, we were asked to think of the average number of games sold in a single year. Numbers ranged from 200 to 1000.
▲ This chart breaks down the number of game titles released every year.
2015: —– ↓
2016: —– ↓
2017: —– ↑
My photography was bad in the moment, so I don’t have the exact numbers for 2015-2017, but the main point was that 2017 signaled in a slight rebound from the downward trend of releases since 2007.
▲ Next, we were asked to think how many games a person buys in the course of a year.
▲ Generally speaking, the average number of games a “game fan” purchases in a year is 8.8. A soft-core gamer buys about 4 games a year.
▲ Next, we were asked to think of what titles sold over 1,000,000 copies in 2017. I was stupid with the numbers (Japanese “man” is a bit difficult to calculate in your brain) and suggested NieR:Automata did…even though I knew it only sold a bit over 300,000 copies. lol
▲ And this was our answer, a list of top selling titles in 2017!
3DS: Dragon Quest 11 – 1,728,000
3DS: Monster Hunter Double Cross – 1,668,000
PS4: Dragon Quest 11 – 1,321,000
Switch: Splatoon2 – 1,309,000
Switch: Mario Cart 8 Deluxe – 717,000
3DS: Pokemon Sun/Moon – 560,000
Switch: Legend of Zelda: Breath of the World – 551,000
Switch: Super Mario Odessy – 511,000
3DS: Super Mario Maker – 397,000
PS4: NieR:Automata – 343,000
▲ Basically, if titles don’t sell over 100,000 copies, they’re losing money…
▲ If we imagine the sales of the top 40 games are positive, then anything 41 to 424 is losing money. 1/10 is in positive figures, whereas 9/10 is in the red.
▲ Among the gaming industry, 1/5 of titles is in positive numbers whereas 4/5s are in the red; which means, 20% have to be MASSIVE HITS!
▲ So it’s very important to know what sort of interesting things will sell. It’s best to avoid talking with people who cannot answer this question.
▲ It’s also vitally important for copies to connect with fans to hear their opinions on a multitude of topics. How/what do people play, read, watch, experience.
▲ This shows the trends of various platforms. The top represents smartphone and PC online games, the middle represents home gaming games, and the last represents home gaming hardware.
December 27, 2015
Online Platform (smartphone & PC) = 998,900,000,000yen
Home Software & Hardware = 360,200,000,000yen
→2016 Home Software & Hardware = 299,400,000,000yen
▲ Global Market Size: 5,400,000,000,000yen; Japan is just 1/14 of this figure.
▲ Global sales for the PS4 is around 60,000,000 units, where as within Japan alone, it’s around 5,000,000.
▲ Titles that sold well overseas:
Super Mario Maker
Final Fantasy XV
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Dark Souls 3
Resident Evil 7
Yokkai Watch 3
Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2
Monster Hunter Double Cross
The Last Guardian
Street Fighter V
▲ The market for home gaming is WORLDWIDE, with a focus on gamers all over the world.
▲ The very last bit of Matsuyama’s talk touched briefly on his non-fiction novel, detailing the true events that occurred with “Hiroshi-kun” just prior to the release of 『.hack//G.U. Vol.3』in 2009.
▶︎ Famitsu was also present for the seminar, so here is their recap of the talk!
First surprise of tonight's launch event- Steam Bikes are now live! Special thanks to VRC community members Jazneo and Mimi for helping us set them up perfectly! Head to Net Slum Tartarga and use the @home doors to check it out!
OH CANADA! (Hand on heart) This Super Fan Friday brings you a very special fan from Canada and her unbelievable .hack collection. ??️
As many of you know we recently opened a studio in Montreal so it means a lot to see fans reach out from our newly adopted home.
Be sure to leave a nice comment for Anastasia and send us any pictures of yourself / collections relating to CC2 if you want to be featured for Super Fan Fridays!
Occupation: School secretary/game store owner
Favorite game of all time: Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn or Star
Ocean The Second Story
Hidden talents: I can move my eye brows individually
Favorite anime/cartoon/movie: Dragon ball series
Favorite CC2 game of all time and why?: .hack GU Reminisce because it's really when you start to see some development in the characters! Also you get more than like 4 people in your members list....
Best CC2 game memory: I remember when I first played Infection and at the opening scene it just starts blinking ERROR after the whole thing with Skeith. I thought I broke my PS2 LOL
Briefly explain the picture you sent us: the pictures are just my whole collection for .hack (minus the ENEMY cards). It's also just easier taking a picture like that then spreading it all out.... There are 3 sets of the English games (missing one Infection and Quarantine to complete the 3rd (also don't ask I have a problem)), a SEALED English set of IMOQ, a Japanese set of IMOQ and GU, the two "the Best" Japanese versions of IMOQ, a sealed KOREAN set (minus Quarantine), a sealed and opened version of the limited LINK game, and the rest you can probably see clearly. Just wanted to explain the jumped mess that just looks like a bunch of the same game lmao
The time is finally here! Anyone who's logged into VR Chat over the last few hours as noticed .hack worlds popping up left and right! It's true that we've done some hard work optimizing and revitalizing each and every world for the event and so as a result, every TWVRC world will be going public today by 7PM! This does include our event hub, Net Slum Tartarga! Stop by Tartarga during the day on November 2nd for some .hack fan meet ups and fun events, including a Steam Bike race, a reading of the .hack project's english translation of Epitaph of the Twilight and the new online Kite novel, and live footage of Last Recode gameplay as soon as its available!
Went out with some other cool .hack fans to enjoy the karaoke collab in Ikebukuro. Personally, I don’t mind going to karaoke alone, but it is more fun to go with a specific purpose in mind!
Here’s a couple photos I took there!
And thanks to one of my new friends, I was able to get SIGNED copies of LieN’s new piano scorebook and CD from M3.
I usually go to the M3 event every year, but couldn’t go this time because of work… I was so upset. There were many people I wanted to say hello to this year, especially after GameTakt. Hopefully some day I will have a job that works in tandem with my life rather than obstructing or limiting it… but that’s everybody’s fantasy, right? Hey, I can dream, right???
